Negleplade refers to the hard, protective covering found on the dorsal surface of the fingertip and toe tip. It is primarily composed of keratin, a tough, fibrous protein also found in hair and skin. The nail plate is translucent and appears pink due to the rich blood supply in the underlying nail bed.

The nail plate grows from the nail matrix, a small area of rapidly dividing cells located at the base of the nail, under the cuticle. As new cells are produced, they push older cells forward, forming the visible nail plate. The rate of nail growth varies between fingernails and toenails, as well as between individuals, influenced by factors like age, nutrition, and health.

Functionally, the nail plate serves several purposes. It protects the sensitive fingertip and toe tip from injury. It also aids in the manipulation of small objects by providing a rigid surface to press against. Furthermore, nails can enhance sensory perception by counteracting pressure on the fingertip. Changes in the appearance, texture, or growth of the nail plate can sometimes indicate underlying health conditions.
