Näkökuoriosaan refers to the visual cortex, a part of the cerebral cortex responsible for processing visual information. Located in the occipital lobe at the back of the brain, it receives input from the eyes via the optic nerves and pathways. This complex area is organized retinotopically, meaning that adjacent areas in the visual cortex correspond to adjacent areas in the visual field.

The visual cortex is further subdivided into several areas, each specialized for processing different aspects of vision. The primary visual cortex (V1) is the first cortical area to receive visual input and is responsible for basic feature detection, such as lines, edges, and orientations. From V1, information is processed in a hierarchical and parallel manner through extrastriate visual areas. These areas, such as V2, V3, V4, and V5 (MT), are involved in more complex visual functions. For example, V4 is crucial for color perception, while V5 is important for motion detection.

Damage to the visual cortex can result in various visual impairments, including blindness, scotomas (blind spots), and difficulties in recognizing objects, colors, or motion. Studies of the visual cortex have provided fundamental insights into how the brain constructs our perception of the world.
