Mélységérzékelésben refers to the perception of depth and distance in a three-dimensional environment. It is a fundamental aspect of visual perception that allows organisms to navigate their surroundings, interact with objects, and avoid obstacles. Humans and many animals utilize a variety of cues, both monocular and binocular, to achieve this sense of depth.

Monocular cues are those that can be perceived with just one eye. These include relative size, where larger objects are perceived as closer; interposition, where an object blocking another is seen as closer; linear perspective, where parallel lines appear to converge in the distance; texture gradient, where textures become finer and less detailed with distance; and motion parallax, where objects closer to the observer appear to move faster than those farther away when the observer is in motion. Atmospheric perspective, where distant objects appear hazier and bluer, also contributes to depth perception.

Binocular cues involve the use of both eyes. The most significant binocular cue is retinal disparity, also known as binocular parallax. Because our eyes are positioned a short distance apart, each eye receives a slightly different image of the world. The brain processes these two images and uses the difference between them to calculate the distance to an object. Convergence, the inward turning of the eyes when focusing on a close object, also provides a cue about proximity. Together, these monocular and binocular cues enable a robust and continuous perception of depth, crucial for many everyday activities.
