mittajärjestelmää
Mittajärjestelmä refers to a system of measurement. In Finland, the metric system, based on the meter, kilogram, and second, is the officially recognized standard. This system replaced earlier, more localized measurement units. Before the widespread adoption of the metric system, various regional units were used for length, area, volume, and weight. For example, the Finnish traditional length unit, the kyynärä, varied in length depending on the region. Similarly, units for land area, such as the tynnyrinala, also differed. The transition to the metric system aimed to standardize measurements for trade, science, and everyday life, facilitating international commerce and scientific collaboration. The Finnish Meteorological Institute and the Finnish Standards Association (SFS) play roles in maintaining and promoting the adherence to these measurement standards. The metric system is now universally used in Finland for all official purposes, including education, industry, and government.
