The most common types of minutiae include ridge endings and bifurcations. A ridge ending is a point where a ridge terminates abruptly. A bifurcation occurs where a single ridge splits into two. Other, less common minutiae types also exist, such as dots (very short ridges) and enclosures (where a ridge bifurcates and then rejoins shortly after, forming an eye-like shape).

The precise location, type, and orientation of these minutiae points are crucial for fingerprint matching. When two fingerprints are compared, algorithms look for a sufficient number of matching minutiae points to declare a match.
