Microcytás is a term used in hematology to describe red blood cells that are smaller than normal. This reduction in size is often indicative of underlying conditions affecting hemoglobin production or red blood cell maturation. The mean corpuscular volume (MCV), a standard blood test parameter, is used to quantify red blood cell size, and a low MCV value signifies microcytosis. Microcytás itself is not a disease but a characteristic finding that points towards specific diagnoses. Common causes of microcytás include iron deficiency anemia, thalassemia, and certain chronic diseases. Iron is essential for the production of hemoglobin, the protein within red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen.
