The mesopelagic zone, also known as the twilight zone, is the layer of the pelagic zone of the ocean that lies between the epipelagic zone and the bathyal zone. It extends from a depth of about 200 meters to 1,000 meters. Light penetrates this zone, but not enough for photosynthesis to occur. This is why it is called the twilight zone; it is perpetually dim.

Life in the mesopelagic zone is adapted to low light conditions and high pressure. Many organisms in this zone exhibit bioluminescence, the production and emission of light by a living organism. This can be used for communication, camouflage, or attracting prey. Common inhabitants include various species of fish, squid, and crustaceans. Many of these animals have large eyes to capture as much light as possible.

The mesopelagic zone plays a crucial role in the ocean's carbon cycle. It is a significant habitat for migrating zooplankton and fish that move vertically between shallower and deeper waters. This vertical migration helps transport nutrients and organic matter throughout the ocean. Despite its importance, the mesopelagic zone is one of the least explored parts of the ocean due to the challenges of accessing and studying it.
