Meristemialueet, often referred to as meristems, are specific regions in plants where cell division, or mitosis, actively occurs. These regions are responsible for the plant's growth. Meristemial tissues are characterized by undifferentiated cells that are small, isodiametric, and have thin cell walls, dense cytoplasm, and large nuclei.

There are two primary classifications of meristems based on their location and origin. Apical meristems are found at the tips of roots and shoots, enabling primary growth in length. These are crucial for the elongation of stems and roots, allowing plants to reach for sunlight and anchor themselves in the soil. In addition to apical meristems, intercalary meristems are also involved in primary growth. These are located at the nodes of stems in some plants, such as grasses, contributing to elongation between points of leaf attachment.

The second major classification is lateral meristems. These include the vascular cambium and the cork cambium, and they are responsible for secondary growth, which increases the girth or diameter of stems and roots. The vascular cambium produces secondary xylem (wood) and secondary phloem (bark), while the cork cambium produces cork cells, forming the protective outer layer of woody plants. This secondary growth is essential for the structural support and water transport capabilities of perennial plants. Meristemial tissues are fundamental to plant development and adaptation.
