A mellékfolyó, also known as a tributary, is a stream or river that flows into a larger stream, river, or lake. It does not flow directly into a sea or ocean. Tributaries are a crucial part of a river system, contributing to its overall volume and flow. The point where a tributary joins a larger river is called a confluence.
The drainage basin of a river system is defined by all the tributaries that feed into it.
In some cases, tributaries can be as large or even larger than the main river they feed
