Matsmältningsorganen, also known as the digestive system, is a complex series of organs responsible for breaking down food into nutrients that the body can absorb and use for energy, growth, and repair. This process begins in the mouth where food is mechanically broken down by chewing and chemically by enzymes in saliva. From the mouth, food travels down the esophagus, a muscular tube, to the stomach.

The stomach is a J-shaped organ that further digests food using strong acids and enzymes. After a period of churning and mixing, the partially digested food, now called chyme, moves into the small intestine. The small intestine is a long, coiled tube where the majority of nutrient absorption takes place. Here, digestive juices from the pancreas and liver further break down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.

Undigested material then passes into the large intestine. The primary role of the large intestine is to absorb water and electrolytes from the remaining indigestible food matter and transmit the useless waste material from the body. Bacteria in the large intestine also play a role in breaking down certain materials and producing vitamins. Finally, waste products are stored in the rectum before being eliminated from the body through the anus. The entire process, from ingestion to elimination, is a carefully coordinated series of muscular contractions and chemical reactions.
