It is employed as a flame retardant in plastics and polymers, as it releases water vapor when heated, which can cool the material and dilute flammable gases. It is also used in wastewater treatment to precipitate heavy metals and to neutralize acidic effluents. In some applications, it serves as a precursor for the production of other magnesium compounds.
