Magneettiaisti, known scientifically as magnetoreception, is the sense that allows some animals to detect the Earth's magnetic field. This biological compass helps them navigate, orient themselves, and even perceive direction. One prominent theory suggests the involvement of specialized cells containing magnetic particles, such as magnetite (Fe3O4), a naturally occurring magnetic iron oxide. These particles, when interacting with the Earth's magnetic field, could cause a physical change or trigger a nerve impulse, providing directional information. Another hypothesis points to cryptochromes, a class of light-sensitive proteins found in the eyes of many animals. These molecules are thought to undergo a chemical reaction influenced by the magnetic field, leading to a visual perception of magnetic direction.

Magnetoreception has been observed in a wide variety of organisms, including birds, sea turtles, salmon, lobsters, and even some mammals like bats and dogs. For migratory species, it plays a crucial role in long-distance travel, allowing them to return to specific breeding or feeding grounds year after year. In other animals, it might be used for shorter-range orientation, such as finding their way back to a burrow or foraging area.
