Lämpövirtaus, in Finnish, refers to heat transfer. It is the physical process by which thermal energy is exchanged between objects or systems due to a temperature difference. There are three primary mechanisms of heat transfer: conduction, convection, and radiation.

Conduction is the transfer of heat through direct contact of particles. In solids, this occurs as vibrations pass from one atom or molecule to another. Liquids and gases also conduct heat, though less efficiently than solids. For example, a metal spoon in a hot cup of tea will become warm through conduction.

Convection involves heat transfer through the movement of fluids, either liquids or gases. When a fluid is heated, it becomes less dense and rises, while cooler, denser fluid sinks. This creates a circulating current that distributes heat. A common example is boiling water, where hot water rises and cooler water sinks, creating convection currents.

Radiation is the transfer of heat through electromagnetic waves. Unlike conduction and convection, radiation does not require a medium and can travel through a vacuum. The sun's heat reaching Earth is a prime example of radiative heat transfer. All objects above absolute zero temperature emit thermal radiation.

Understanding heat transfer is crucial in many scientific and engineering disciplines, including thermodynamics, meteorology, and material science. It plays a significant role in everything from designing efficient heating and cooling systems to understanding climate change and the operation of stars.
