Lämpönsiirtoperiaate describes the fundamental ways in which thermal energy moves from one place to another. These principles are crucial for understanding and engineering many natural phenomena and technological applications. There are three primary mechanisms of heat transfer: conduction, convection, and radiation.

Conduction is the transfer of heat through direct contact between particles. In solids, this occurs as vibrations of atoms and molecules are passed along. In fluids (liquids and gases), it also involves collisions between molecules. Conduction is most efficient in materials that readily allow heat to flow, such as metals.

Convection involves the transfer of heat through the movement of fluids. When a part of a fluid is heated, it becomes less dense and rises, while cooler, denser fluid sinks to take its place. This creates convection currents that distribute heat throughout the fluid. Examples include boiling water or the circulation of air in a room.

Radiation is the transfer of heat through electromagnetic waves. Unlike conduction and convection, radiation does not require a medium to travel and can occur through a vacuum. The sun's heat reaching Earth is a prime example of radiative heat transfer. All objects above absolute zero temperature emit thermal radiation.

Understanding these three modes of heat transfer allows for the design of efficient heating and cooling systems, insulation materials, and a wide range of other applications, from power generation to cooking.
