látásrendszer (visual system) refers to the anatomical and physiological mechanisms that enable an organism to perceive light and interpret visual information. It comprises the eye, the neural pathways connecting the eye to the brain, and the brain regions responsible for processing visual data.

The eye is the primary organ of the visual system, containing structures such as the cornea, lens, and retina. Light enters the eye, is focused by the lens onto the retina, where photoreceptor cells (rods and cones) convert light energy into electrical signals. These signals are transmitted via the optic nerve to the brain.

The visual pathway extends from the retina through the optic chiasm (where some fibers cross to the opposite side) to the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) in the thalamus, and then to the primary visual cortex (V1) in the occipital lobe. Neurons in these regions transmit and integrate visual information, enabling perception of form, color, motion, and depth.

The visual system is crucial for navigation, communication, and survival, allowing organisms to interpret their environment and respond appropriately. Dysfunctions in any component of the system can lead to visual impairments, such as blindness or reduced acuity.
