Lungeartär is the Swedish term for the pulmonary artery. The pulmonary artery is a major artery that arises from the right ventricle of the heart and carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs. It is the only artery in the adult body that carries deoxygenated blood.

The pulmonary artery begins as a short, wide trunk that branches into two main arteries, the left and right pulmonary arteries, which lead to the corresponding lungs. Within the lungs, these arteries further subdivide into smaller arterioles and capillaries, where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place. The oxygenated blood then returns to the left atrium of the heart via the pulmonary veins.

The pulmonary artery plays a crucial role in the circulatory system, ensuring that blood is oxygenated before being pumped to the rest of the body. Conditions affecting the pulmonary artery, such as pulmonary hypertension or pulmonary embolism, can have serious health consequences. The pressure within the pulmonary artery is significantly lower than in the systemic circulation.
