Lung ventilation refers to the process by which air is exchanged between the atmosphere and the lungs. The primary mechanism of lung ventilation is the process of inhalation and exhalation, which is driven by the contraction and relaxation of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles.

Inhalation, or inspiration, occurs when the diaphragm contracts, flattening and increasing the volume of the thoracic cavity. This expansion creates a negative pressure within the lungs, causing air to flow into the lungs. Exhalation, or expiration, occurs when the diaphragm relaxes, returning to its dome shape and reducing the volume of the thoracic cavity. This action creates a positive pressure within the lungs, forcing air out.

Lung ventilation can be measured using various techniques, including spirometry, which assesses the volume and flow of air during breathing. Abnormalities in lung ventilation can indicate conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or other respiratory disorders. Proper lung ventilation is crucial for maintaining overall health and well-being, as it ensures adequate oxygenation of the body's tissues and the efficient removal of waste gases.
