A liikehermosolu, also known as a motor neuron, is a nerve cell that transmits signals from the central nervous system to the muscles, causing them to contract. These cells are crucial for all voluntary movements, from walking and talking to fine motor skills like writing. There are two main types of motor neurons: upper motor neurons and lower motor neurons. Upper motor neurons originate in the brain and brainstem, while lower motor neurons originate in the spinal cord and brainstem.

The signal transmission begins when an upper motor neuron sends a signal down the spinal cord. This signal then activates a lower motor neuron, which extends its axon to a specific muscle fiber. At the neuromuscular junction, the lower motor neuron releases a neurotransmitter, typically acetylcholine, which binds to receptors on the muscle fiber. This binding triggers a cascade of events leading to muscle contraction.

Disruptions or damage to motor neurons can lead to a variety of neurological disorders, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), multiple sclerosis (MS), and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). These conditions can result in muscle weakness, paralysis, and other debilitating symptoms. Research into motor neuron function and disease is ongoing, aiming to develop effective treatments and therapies for affected individuals.
