Lhyperréflexie, also known as hyperreflexia, is a neurological condition characterized by exaggerated or abnormally strong reflexes. These reflexes are involuntary muscle contractions that occur in response to a stimulus, such as a tap on a tendon or a sudden touch. In individuals with hyperreflexia, the reflexes are more pronounced than what is considered normal.

This condition typically arises from an issue in the central nervous system, specifically the brain or spinal cord, which are responsible for regulating reflex responses. Damage or dysfunction in these areas can lead to a loss of inhibitory control over the reflex arc, resulting in an overactive response. Common causes include spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, stroke, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and certain metabolic disorders.

The symptoms of hyperreflexia can vary in severity. Mild cases might involve slightly more vigorous muscle twitches. In more severe instances, individuals may experience involuntary muscle spasms, clonus (a series of rapid, involuntary muscle contractions), and an increased muscle tone. These symptoms can interfere with voluntary movements and may cause discomfort or pain.

Diagnosis of hyperreflexia is usually made through a physical examination where a healthcare professional tests the patient's reflexes using a reflex hammer. Observing an exaggerated response confirms the presence of the condition. In some cases, further diagnostic tests like MRI or CT scans may be performed to identify the underlying cause in the nervous system.

Treatment for hyperreflexia focuses on managing the underlying cause and alleviating the symptoms. Medications such as muscle relaxants or antispasmodics may be prescribed to reduce the excitability of the muscles and control spasms. Physical therapy can also play a role in improving muscle control and function.
