Language switching, or code-switching, is the practice of alternating between two or more languages or language varieties within a single discourse. It is common among multilingual communities and can occur in casual conversation, formal speech, writing, and digital communication. The phenomenon is not random; it is shaped by social context, interlocutor relations, topic, and individual language competence.

There are different forms. Inter-sentential switching occurs between sentences, while intra-sentential switching happens within a single sentence. Tag switching inserts a tag or a fixed expression from one language into another sentence. Borrowings that become fixed words are not necessarily switches.

Functions include signaling identity, solidarity, or stance; filling lexical gaps; quoting or repeating others; avoiding stigma or taboo; and marking topic or turns in conversation. The choice of language can convey attitudes toward a person, a group, or a situation and may evolve over time.

Cognitive and educational aspects: research suggests bilinguals can switch languages fluidly and that switching does not indicate confusion. Some studies report benefits in executive control and cognitive flexibility, though findings are mixed. Social norms and power dynamics strongly influence when and how switching occurs.

In education and policy, language switching is recognized as a natural resource in multilingual settings. It can support comprehension and literacy when used intentionally in bilingual education or translanguaging approaches, but may be constrained by monolingual ideologies in some institutions.
