Kärnövergångar, or nuclear transitions, refer to the process where an atomic nucleus changes from one energy state to another. These transitions can occur through several mechanisms, including the emission or absorption of particles or electromagnetic radiation. The most common type of nuclear transition involves the emission of gamma rays, which are high-energy photons. This happens when a nucleus is in an excited state and seeks to return to a lower energy level. Another type of transition involves the emission of alpha or beta particles, which are helium nuclei and electrons, respectively. These processes, known as radioactive decay, also result in a change in the nucleus's energy state.
The energy difference between the initial and final states of the nucleus dictates the energy of the
