Kvantfärgkromodynamik, or Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), is the theory of the strong interaction, one of the four fundamental forces of nature. It describes the interactions between quarks and gluons, the fundamental particles that make up protons and neutrons, which in turn are the building blocks of atomic nuclei. QCD is a quantum field theory, meaning it combines principles of quantum mechanics with special relativity.

In QCD, quarks and gluons are held together by the strong force, which is mediated by the exchange of gluons. Unlike the electromagnetic force, which can be shielded by other charges, the strong force becomes weaker as the distance between quarks increases, a phenomenon known as asymptotic freedom. This is why quarks are never found in isolation; they are always confined within hadrons, such as protons and neutrons.

QCD is mathematically complex and is typically studied using perturbation theory, which involves expanding the theory in powers of a small parameter, known as the coupling constant. However, at low energies, this approach becomes unreliable due to the phenomenon of confinement. In this regime, lattice QCD, a non-perturbative approach, is used to study the theory numerically.

QCD has been extensively tested and confirmed by experiments, such as those conducted at particle accelerators like the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It is a cornerstone of the Standard Model of particle physics, which describes the fundamental particles and their interactions. Despite its success, QCD remains an active area of research, with many open questions, such as the nature of confinement and the mass generation of quarks.
