Kryogenisk refers to the study and production of very low temperatures, typically below -150 degrees Celsius (-238 degrees Fahrenheit) and down to absolute zero (-273.15 degrees Celsius or -459.67 degrees Fahrenheit). The term originates from the Greek words "kryos" meaning cold and "gennan" meaning to produce. Materials that exhibit special properties at these extremely low temperatures are known as cryogenic materials.

The field of cryogenics involves specialized equipment and techniques to achieve and maintain these low temperatures. Common cryogens, substances used to achieve these low temperatures, include liquid nitrogen, liquid helium, and liquid hydrogen. These substances are stored and transported in insulated containers called Dewars.

Applications of cryogenics are widespread and impact various scientific and industrial sectors. In medicine, cryogenics is used for cryopreservation of biological samples like sperm, eggs, and tissues, as well as in cryosurgery to remove unwanted tissue. In science and research, it's essential for operating superconducting magnets used in MRI scanners and particle accelerators, and for studying the properties of materials at low temperatures. Industries utilize cryogenics for gas liquefaction, food freezing, and in rocket propulsion systems where liquid hydrogen and oxygen are used as fuel.
