Kotitulostimien refers to the incubation and early development of chicken embryos outside the womb. This process is closely related to the technology of artificial incubation and the breeding of chickens. The development of chicken eggs has three distinct stages: the formation of the egg before it is laid, the incubation period, and the growth of the chick after hatching.

The ovum or egg cell is formed in the highest point of the oviduct in the female chicken. The process of forming an egg includes the secretion of yolk, albumen, and membrane. Fertilized eggs are propelled from the oviduct through an oviduct canal into the vent and deposited from the chicken's reproductive tract. Once laid, the egg loses its connection to the reproductive tract of the chicken.

Kotitulostimien involves the artificial reproduction of conditions necessary for eggshell development. Artificial incubation has shown significant advancements. Eggs can be made fertile by artificial insemination, and fertile eggs can be stored for several weeks, giving breeders a longer time to select a suitable breeding season or reproduction period.
