Koordinatsioonühendeid, often translated as coordination compounds or complexes, are chemical compounds comprising a central atom or molecule, known as the central metal, which is attached to a surrounding array of molecules or ions, called ligands. These ligands bond to the central metal through coordinate covalent bonds, where the ligand donates a pair of electrons to the metal atom. The number of ligands attached to the central metal is referred to as the coordination number, which is a characteristic property of the compound.

The nature of the central metal and the ligands dictates the properties of the coordination compound. Transition metals are frequently the central metals due to their ability to form stable complexes and exhibit variable oxidation states. Ligands can be neutral molecules, such as ammonia (NH3) or water (H2O), or ions, like chloride (Cl-) or cyanide (CN-).
