At its peak in the early 20th century, Koonside had a one-room schoolhouse, a post office, and a modest church.

The post office, which operated from 1892 to 1918, is noted in postal history records as one of the earliest in the county. Following the closure of the post office, residents increasingly relied on the neighboring town of Shelbina for mail services. By the mid-20th century, most residents had moved to larger municipalities, and the schoolhouse was repurposed as a community center until the 1970s. In recent decades, the area has largely reverted to agricultural use, with a few residential properties and scattered farms.

Koonside appears in several state archives, including land deeds, census records, and agricultural reports. Its exact population is not recorded separately in the U.S. Census, as it is considered part of the broader Jefferson County unincorporated area. The community remains a point of historical interest for local historians studying rural settlement patterns in Kentucky.
