Koljuõõt refers to the cranial cavity, the space within the skull that houses the brain and its protective coverings. This bony structure is formed by the fused bones of the skull, including the frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital, sphenoid, and ethmoid bones. The inner surface of the cranial cavity is irregular, with ridges and depressions that correspond to the gyri and sulci of the brain.

Within the cranial cavity, the brain is further protected by three membranes known as the meninges: the dura mater, the arachnoid mater, and the pia mater. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulates in the subarachnoid space, between the arachnoid mater and the pia mater, providing cushioning and shock absorption. The cranial cavity also contains blood vessels that supply the brain, such as arteries and veins, as well as cranial nerves that emerge from the brainstem.

The size and shape of the cranial cavity vary among individuals and are influenced by genetics and development. Trauma to the head can lead to injuries within the cranial cavity, affecting the brain and its surrounding structures. Medical imaging techniques like CT scans and MRIs are used to visualize the cranial cavity and diagnose any abnormalities.
