Koagulationflockulering is a two-step process used in water treatment and other industrial applications to remove suspended solid particles. The first step, coagulation, involves adding chemicals called coagulants, such as aluminum sulfate or ferric chloride, to the water. These chemicals neutralize the negative electrical charges on the suspended particles, causing them to clump together.

The second step, flocculation, follows coagulation. In this stage, the water is gently agitated, promoting the formation of larger, heavier aggregates called flocs. These flocs are formed by the destabilized particles colliding and binding to each other. The addition of a polymer, known as a flocculant, can further enhance this process by bridging the smaller particles together, creating even larger and more settleable flocs.

Once the flocs have formed, they are typically removed from the water through sedimentation or filtration. In sedimentation, the water is held in a basin, allowing the heavier flocs to settle to the bottom. In filtration, the water is passed through a porous medium, such as sand or gravel, which traps the flocs. This process is crucial for clarifying water, removing turbidity, and preparing it for further treatment or discharge.
