Jouh, also known as a joule, is the standard unit of energy in the International System of Units (SI). It is defined as the energy transferred to or work done on an object when a force of one newton acts on the object in the direction of the force and over a distance of one meter. The joule is named after the English physicist James Prescott Joule.

One joule is equivalent to one newton-meter (Nm) and also one watt-second (Ws). This means that if a force of one newton moves an object one meter, one joule of work is done. Similarly, if one watt of power is used for one second, one joule of energy is consumed or transferred. The joule is a versatile unit used to measure various forms of energy, including kinetic energy, potential energy, heat energy, and electrical energy. For instance, lifting an apple weighing 100 grams by one meter against Earth's gravity requires approximately one joule of energy. Larger units like the kilojoule (kJ) and megajoule (MJ) are often used for greater quantities of energy.
