Isopreeniyksiköt refers to the fundamental building blocks of many naturally occurring organic compounds, particularly terpenes and terpenoids. The isoprenoid unit is a five-carbon molecule, formally derived from isoprene (2-methylbuta-1,3-diene). In biological systems, isoprene itself is not directly polymerized, but rather its precursors, isopentenyl pyrophosphate (IPP) and dimethylallyl pyrophosphate (DMAPP), are used as the activated isoprene units. These two molecules are isomers and can be interconverted by enzymes.

The characteristic head-to-tail linkage of these isoprenoid units is responsible for the vast structural diversity of terpenes.
