Interossei is a term used in anatomy to refer to muscles located between bones. There are two main groups of interossei muscles in the human body: the dorsal interossei and the palmar interossei. These muscles are primarily found in the hand and foot.

In the hand, the dorsal interossei muscles are located on the back of the hand, between the metacarpal bones. They originate from the adjacent sides of the metacarpals and insert onto the bases of the proximal phalanges. The dorsal interossei are responsible for abducting the fingers, meaning they spread them apart.

The palmar interossei muscles are located on the palm side of the hand, also between the metacarpal bones. Unlike the dorsal interossei, they typically originate from only one metacarpal bone and insert onto the proximal phalanx of the same finger. The palmar interossei muscles are responsible for adducting the fingers, bringing them together.

In the foot, similar muscles exist between the metatarsal bones. The dorsal interossei of the foot also act to abduct the toes. The plantar interossei of the foot contribute to toe flexion and adduction. Both the hand and foot interossei are crucial for fine motor control and dexterity.
