The process begins with the homolytic cleavage of a weak bond within the initiator molecule. This cleavage results in the formation of two radical fragments. One of these fragments, the initiator radical, then attacks a monomer molecule. Monomers are the small building blocks that link together to form a polymer. The initiator radical adds to the monomer, forming a new, larger radical species.

This new radical can then react with another monomer, propagating the chain reaction. This propagation step involves the addition of successive monomer units to the growing polymer chain, each addition creating a new radical at the end of the chain.
