Immuunitoiminta refers to the complex biological system responsible for protecting an organism from pathogens and disease. It involves a coordinated effort of various cells, tissues, and organs working together to identify and eliminate foreign invaders such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. This intricate defense network is broadly divided into two main branches: the innate immune system and the adaptive immune system.

The innate immune system provides a rapid, non-specific response to a wide range of threats. It includes physical barriers like skin and mucous membranes, as well as specialized cells such as phagocytes (e.g., macrophages, neutrophils) that engulf and destroy pathogens, and natural killer cells that target infected or cancerous cells. Inflammation is also a key component of the innate response, helping to recruit immune cells to the site of infection and contain the damage.

The adaptive immune system, on the other hand, offers a slower but highly specific and memory-based defense. It is characterized by the action of lymphocytes, specifically B cells and T cells. B cells produce antibodies, proteins that bind to specific antigens on pathogens, marking them for destruction. T cells have various roles, including helping B cells produce antibodies (helper T cells) and directly killing infected cells (cytotoxic T cells). A crucial feature of the adaptive immune system is immunological memory, meaning that after encountering a pathogen, it can mount a faster and stronger response upon subsequent exposures, which is the principle behind vaccination.
