Hematopoïdétique is a term derived from Greek words meaning "blood" and "to form." It refers to the process of hematopoiesis, which is the formation of blood cellular components. This complex biological process occurs primarily in the bone marrow in adult mammals. Hematopoiesis is a continuous and highly regulated mechanism responsible for generating all types of blood cells, including red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets (thrombocytes).

The hematopoietic system originates from multipotent stem cells, specifically hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). These remarkable cells have the unique ability to self-renew, ensuring a lifelong supply of blood cells, and to differentiate into all the various blood cell lineages. This differentiation process involves a series of intermediate progenitor cells that gradually commit to specific cell fates. For example, myeloid progenitor cells give rise to granulocytes, monocytes, erythrocytes, and megakaryocytes (which produce platelets), while lymphoid progenitor cells develop into lymphocytes.
