hofteskålen
Hofteskålen, also known as the acetabulum, is a crucial component of the human hip joint. It is a deep, cup-shaped socket located in the pelvis. This socket is formed by the ilium, ischium, and pubis, which are the three bones that fuse to form the hip bone. The acetabulum's primary function is to articulate with the head of the femur, the thigh bone, forming the hip joint. This articulation allows for a wide range of motion, including flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, and rotation of the leg. The inner surface of the acetabulum is lined with articular cartilage, a smooth, resilient tissue that reduces friction between the bones during movement. A ring of fibrocartilage called the acetabular labrum surrounds the rim of the socket, deepening it and providing stability to the hip joint. This structure helps to prevent dislocation and enhances the load-bearing capacity of the joint. The acetabulum's shape and depth are vital for maintaining the stability and mobility of the hip, which is essential for walking, running, and many other daily activities.
