Hermostokudoksen, or nervous tissue, is one of the four primary types of animal tissue. It is responsible for coordinating and controlling the body's responses to both internal and external stimuli. This tissue is found throughout the body, forming the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.

The fundamental units of nervous tissue are neurons, also known as nerve cells. Neurons are specialized cells designed for transmitting electrical and chemical signals. They typically consist of a cell body, dendrites that receive signals, and an axon that transmits signals to other cells. Supporting cells, called glial cells or neuroglia, are also a crucial component of nervous tissue. Glial cells provide structural support, nourishment, and insulation to neurons, and play a role in maintaining the overall health and function of the nervous system.

Nervous tissue is broadly categorized into two main divisions: the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The CNS comprises the brain and spinal cord, acting as the body's command center. The PNS consists of all the nerves that extend outside the CNS, connecting it to the rest of the body and relaying information back and forth. The complex network of nervous tissue enables rapid communication, allowing for intricate processes such as thought, sensation, movement, and organ regulation.
