Hexamethylenediamine, also known as 1,6-hexanediamine or HMDA, is an aliphatic diamine with the chemical formula C6H16N2. It is a colorless, viscous liquid at room temperature, miscible with water and many organic solvents, and is hygroscopic.

Industrially, HMDA is produced by hydrogenation of adiponitrile, an intermediate derived from acrylonitrile and butadiene feedstocks. It serves as a major precursor in polymer synthesis and is widely used as a monomer in the production of nylon 6,6, formed by reaction with adipic acid. In addition to polyamides, HMDA is employed as a curing agent for epoxy resins and as a chain extender in polyurethanes and other polymers.

Safety and handling practices reflect its chemical reactivity and hazards. HMDA is corrosive to skin and eyes and can cause severe irritation; repeated exposure may lead to sensitization. It can be hazardous if inhaled or ingested. Handling should be performed with appropriate personal protective equipment and adequate ventilation, and storage should be in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from oxidizers.
