Höyrynestee is a Finnish term that translates to "vapor barrier" or "steam barrier." It refers to a material or a layer installed in a building's construction to prevent moisture in the form of water vapor from migrating through the building envelope. This is crucial for maintaining the durability of building materials and preventing issues like mold growth and condensation.

The primary function of a höyrynestee is to control the movement of moisture. In cold climates, warm, moist indoor air can move outwards through the walls, ceilings, and floors. If this moist air encounters a cold surface within the building structure, it can condense, leading to moisture damage. A höyrynestee, typically placed on the warm side of the insulation (e.g., on the interior side of walls in a heated building), acts as a barrier to this vapor movement.

Common materials used as höyrynestee include specialized plastic films, often made of polyethylene, as well as certain types of paper and foil. The effectiveness of a vapor barrier is measured by its permeance, which indicates how easily water vapor can pass through it. Low permeance materials are considered good vapor barriers.
