Glossopharyngeal refers to anatomical structures related to both the tongue and the pharynx. The glossopharyngeal nerve, also known as cranial nerve IX, is a mixed nerve that originates in the brainstem and innervates structures in the head and neck. It carries sensory information from the posterior third of the tongue, the pharynx, and the ear, as well as motor control to certain muscles involved in swallowing and salivation. Damage to the glossopharyngeal nerve can result in a variety of symptoms, including difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), loss of taste sensation on the back of the tongue, and referred pain to the ear. The nerve also plays a role in the gag reflex.
