Glomerulaarsetes refers to the glomeruli, which are tiny filtering units within the kidneys. Each kidney contains approximately one million glomeruli. Their primary function is to filter blood, removing waste products and excess fluid to produce urine. This filtration process is crucial for maintaining the body's fluid balance and eliminating metabolic byproducts.

The glomerulus is a network of small blood vessels, called capillaries, enclosed within a cup-shaped structure known as Bowman's capsule. Blood enters the glomerulus through an afferent arteriole and exits through an efferent arteriole. As blood flows through the glomerular capillaries, pressure forces water, salts, glucose, urea, and other small molecules from the blood into Bowman's capsule. Larger components of blood, such as red blood cells and proteins, are retained in the capillaries and do not pass into the filtrate.

The filtered fluid, now called glomerular filtrate, then moves into the renal tubules, where essential substances like glucose and amino acids are reabsorbed back into the bloodstream, and further waste products are added. The remaining fluid becomes urine. The health and function of the glomeruli are vital for overall kidney health. Conditions that damage the glomeruli, such as glomerulonephritis, can impair kidney function and lead to serious health problems, including kidney failure. Medical conditions affecting the glomeruli are often referred to as glomerular diseases.
