Fuusiovoima refers to the generation of energy through nuclear fusion. This process mimics the way stars, like our sun, produce light and heat by fusing atomic nuclei together. In a fusion reactor, light atomic nuclei, typically isotopes of hydrogen such as deuterium and tritium, are heated to extremely high temperatures, creating a plasma. Under these conditions, the nuclei overcome their natural electrostatic repulsion and merge, forming a heavier nucleus, releasing a significant amount of energy in the process.

The primary challenge in achieving controlled fusion power is maintaining the plasma at the required high temperatures and pressures for a sustained period. Two main approaches are being explored to achieve this confinement: magnetic confinement and inertial confinement. Magnetic confinement uses powerful magnetic fields to contain the hot plasma, preventing it from touching the reactor walls. Tokamaks and stellarators are prominent examples of magnetic confinement devices. Inertial confinement, on the other hand, uses intense lasers or particle beams to rapidly compress and heat a small pellet of fusion fuel, initiating fusion reactions before the pellet can disassemble.

If successfully developed, fusion power holds the promise of a virtually inexhaustible and clean energy source. The fuels, deuterium, can be extracted from water, and tritium can be bred from lithium, both abundant elements. Fusion power plants are also expected to produce significantly less long-lived radioactive waste compared to current nuclear fission reactors and do not carry the same risks of meltdown. However, many technical and engineering hurdles remain before fusion power can become a practical reality.
