Fotosüsteemidesse refer to the two main pigment-protein complexes, Photosystem I and Photosystem II, involved in the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis. These complexes are embedded within the thylakoid membranes of chloroplasts and are responsible for capturing light energy and converting it into chemical energy in the form of ATP and NADPH.

Photosystem II is the first photosystem in the photosynthetic electron transport chain. It absorbs light energy, primarily in the red region of the spectrum, and uses it to split water molecules in a process called photolysis. This splitting releases electrons, protons, and oxygen. The electrons are then passed along an electron transport chain.

Photosystem I receives electrons from Photosystem II and, upon absorbing light energy, further energizes these electrons. These high-energy electrons are then used to reduce NADP+ to NADPH, another crucial energy-carrying molecule for photosynthesis. The overall process in both photosystems leads to the generation of a proton gradient across the thylakoid membrane, which drives ATP synthesis.

The two photosystems work in a sequential manner, with Photosystem II initiating the process by capturing light and splitting water, and Photosystem I completing the electron flow by reducing NADP+. This intricate interplay is fundamental to harnessing light energy for the production of sugars in plants and other photosynthetic organisms.
