Enzymesubstrate refers to the molecule upon which an enzyme acts. Each enzyme is highly specific, typically binding to only one or a few particular substrates. The interaction between an enzyme and its substrate begins when the substrate molecule fits into the active site of the enzyme, forming what is known as an enzyme-substrate complex. This binding is often described by models such as the lock-and-key model, where the substrate (key) perfectly fits the active site (lock), or the induced-fit model, where the active site slightly changes its shape to accommodate the substrate more precisely.

Once bound, the enzyme facilitates the chemical transformation of the substrate into one or more products. This transformation can involve breaking chemical bonds, forming new ones, or rearranging atoms. After the reaction is complete, the products are released from the active site, and the enzyme is free to bind to another substrate molecule and repeat the catalytic cycle. The efficiency and specificity of enzyme-substrate interactions are crucial for a vast array of biological processes, including metabolism, DNA replication, and signal transduction.
