Enkeltcellede, also known as unicellular organisms, are living entities composed of a single cell. This single cell performs all the essential functions of life, including metabolism, reproduction, and response to stimuli. Despite their simplicity, unicellular organisms exhibit a remarkable diversity in form, function, and habitat. They are found in virtually every environment on Earth, from the deepest oceans and hottest springs to the soil beneath our feet and even within other living organisms.

The two primary domains of life that consist entirely of unicellular organisms are bacteria and archaea. These are prokaryotes, meaning their cells lack a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles. Eukaryotes, which have cells with a nucleus and organelles, also include unicellular forms such as protists (like amoebas and paramecia) and some fungi (like yeast). Unicellular organisms reproduce asexually, typically through binary fission, where one cell divides into two identical daughter cells. Some can also reproduce sexually through processes like conjugation. Their small size and rapid reproductive rates allow them to adapt quickly to changing environmental conditions. They play crucial roles in ecosystems, acting as decomposers, primary producers, and essential components of food webs.
