Endoplasmático refers to the endoplasmic reticulum, a network of membranes found throughout the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells. This extensive organelle plays a crucial role in protein and lipid synthesis and metabolism. The endoplasmic reticulum is comprised of interconnected tubules and flattened sacs called cisternae. It exists in two forms: the rough endoplasmic reticulum and the smooth endoplasmic reticulum.

The rough endoplasmic reticulum is characterized by the presence of ribosomes attached to its outer surface. These ribosomes are responsible for synthesizing proteins that are destined for secretion, insertion into membranes, or delivery to other organelles. As proteins are synthesized, they enter the lumen of the rough ER where they undergo folding and modification.

The smooth endoplasmic reticulum lacks ribosomes and is involved in a variety of metabolic processes. These include lipid synthesis, detoxification of drugs and poisons, and the storage of calcium ions. In muscle cells, the smooth ER, known as the sarcoplasmic reticulum, is particularly important for calcium regulation, which is essential for muscle contraction. The endoplasmic reticulum is a dynamic structure, constantly changing its shape and interacting with other organelles within the cell. Its intricate network facilitates the efficient transport and processing of essential molecules.
