Embryológie is the branch of biology that studies the development of an embryo from fertilization to birth or hatching. It examines the processes of cell division, differentiation, and morphogenesis that lead to the formation of a complex organism. Embryological studies trace the origin of all the different tissues and organs within an organism, understanding how they are formed and organized.

Key stages in embryological development include gametogenesis, fertilization, cleavage, gastrulation, and organogenesis. Gametogenesis is the process of producing reproductive cells, sperm and eggs. Fertilization is the fusion of these gametes to form a zygote, the first cell of the new organism. Cleavage involves rapid cell divisions of the zygote, forming a blastula. Gastrulation then reorganizes these cells into germ layers: ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm, which will give rise to all the body's tissues and organs. Organogenesis is the formation of these organs from the germ layers.

Embryology is crucial for understanding developmental abnormalities, congenital diseases, and evolutionary relationships between species. Comparative embryology, which compares the embryonic development of different organisms, has provided significant insights into evolutionary history, famously illustrated by Ernst Haeckel's early, though somewhat exaggerated, depiction of recapitulation. Modern embryology utilizes advanced techniques, including genetic analysis and imaging, to further unravel the intricate mechanisms of development.
