Elektronüleminekute, often translated as electron transitions, refers to the process where an electron in an atom or molecule changes its energy level. This change in energy is typically a jump from a lower energy state to a higher energy state, or a drop from a higher energy state to a lower energy state. These transitions are fundamental to understanding various physical phenomena, including the emission and absorption of light.

When an electron absorbs energy, for instance from a photon, it can be excited to a higher energy orbital. This excited state is usually unstable. Consequently, the electron will quickly return to a lower, more stable energy level. As it transitions back down, it releases the excess energy, often in the form of a photon of specific wavelength. This emitted light is what gives rise to atomic emission spectra.

Conversely, when an atom or molecule is exposed to radiation of a specific frequency corresponding to the energy difference between two electron energy levels, an electron can absorb that energy and jump to a higher level. This phenomenon is known as absorption. The specific wavelengths of light absorbed or emitted by a substance are unique to that substance, forming its characteristic spectral fingerprint. This principle is widely used in spectroscopy for identifying elements and molecules. Quantum mechanics dictates that these transitions occur instantaneously and that electrons can only occupy discrete energy levels within an atom or molecule.
