Elektrolyysilaitteeseen, often translated as electrolysis apparatus or electrolyzer, is a device used to perform electrolysis. Electrolysis is a process that uses electrical energy to drive a non-spontaneous chemical reaction. In an electrolyzer, two electrodes, an anode and a cathode, are immersed in an electrolyte solution or molten salt. When an electric current is passed through the electrolyte, ions within it migrate towards the electrodes of opposite charge. At the anode, oxidation occurs, where a substance loses electrons. At the cathode, reduction occurs, where a substance gains electrons. This controlled movement of ions and electron transfer results in the decomposition of a compound or the deposition of a material.
