Domicil, derived from the Latin word "domicilium" meaning dwelling or abode, refers to a person's principal residence or legal home. It is the place where an individual lives permanently and intends to return to, even if temporarily absent. The concept of domicil is fundamental in various legal contexts, including taxation, inheritance, and jurisdiction. It establishes the legal framework for determining which laws apply to a person and where they are considered to be officially resident.

Establishing domicil is generally based on two key elements: physical presence and the intention to remain indefinitely. Simply residing in a place for a short period does not automatically confer domicil. A person must have the intention to make that place their permanent home. This intention can be inferred from actions, such as registering to vote, obtaining a driver's license, or purchasing property. Domicil can be acquired, changed, or retained. An acquired domicil is the first place of domicil. A change of domicil occurs when a person abandons their previous domicil and acquires a new one. A retained domicil is the domicil that a person retains until they acquire a new one. In some legal systems, an individual may have multiple residences but only one domicil. This distinction is crucial for determining legal rights and obligations.
