Deixis refers to words or phrases whose meaning is dependent on the context in which they are used. These "pointing words" or "indexicals" require information beyond their literal definition to be understood. The study of deixis falls within linguistics, specifically pragmatics and semantics.

There are several types of deixis. Person deixis refers to the speaker and listener, exemplified by pronouns like "I," "you," and "we." Place deixis indicates location relative to the speaker, using words such as "here," "there," "this," and "that." Time deixis points to temporal locations or durations, including terms like "now," "then," "today," "tomorrow," and "yesterday."

Other forms include discourse deixis, which refers to parts of the ongoing conversation or text ("this chapter," "that point"), and social deixis, which conveys social information about the speaker, listener, or referent ("Sir," "Ma'am," "you" as a formal or informal address).

The interpretation of deictic terms is crucial for effective communication. Without the shared context of who is speaking, where they are, and when they are speaking, deictic expressions are ambiguous. For example, the statement "I am here now" has a different meaning depending on who says it, where they say it, and at what time. Deixis highlights the embodied and situated nature of language use.
